Costs for essential medicines like analgesics, anti-infectives, cardiac drugs, and antibiotics are set to rise at the beginning of April. This will affect consumers who are already feeling the effects of inflation.

The government intends to grant medication businesses a raise under the yearly Wholesale Price Index rise (WPI). According to the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA), the annual change in WPI, as reported by the government, would be 12.12% in 2022.

Prices for 384 compounds on the national list of essential pharmaceuticals are predicted to rise by 12%, exceeding the permitted maximum for non-scheduled medications. The National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) regulates the prices of these drugs on the national list of essential medicines, also known as scheduled drugs.

The remaining non-scheduled medications, which are not subject to price controls, are permitted a 10% yearly increase. In line with the Wholesale Price Index (WPI) adjustment, the ensuing increase in pharmaceuticals was more than 10% in 2021.

Historically, the price increase caused by the annual change in the WPI has been minor, fluctuating between 1% and 2% during the last few years. According to reports, the NPPA will announce the ceiling prices for the scheduled formulations in the next days.

The development will be welcomed by the sector, which has been dealing with increased manufacturing costs due to various issues. During the pandemic, the industry adversely affected by an increase in raw material prices (active pharmaceutical ingredients), goods, and an increase in plastics and packaging material, among other expenditures.
